A stencil is essentially a precision tool. The metal foil must be stretched uniformly across a mesh frame to create a consistent plane. When this tension is correct, the stencil acts like a trampoline: it touches the PCB during printing, then snaps back immediately, leaving the paste perfectly deposited on the pads.

Ⅰ.The Symptoms of Low Tension

When a stencil loses its elasticity—often due to wear and tear, improper cleaning, or frame damage—it becomes "loose." This condition is a primary culprit behind a host of SMT assembly defects that we actively guard against at KINGSHENG.

• 3.Tombstoning and Misalignment: Insufficient tension leads to inconsistent paste volume. Too little paste on one pad of a passive component (like a resistor) can cause it to lift and "tombstone" during reflow.

• 2.Setup & Pre-Production Check: Every time a stencil is pulled from our inventory for a job, it is tested before setup begins. This catches any degradation that may have occurred during storage or from previous cycles.
• 3.Scheduled Re-Testing: For long-running production batches, we do not simply "set it and forget it." We conduct mid-run checks. If a stencil has a high usage history (approaching 50,000 prints), we increase the frequency of testing to ensure it hasn't suddenly fatigued.
• 4.Post-Production Verification: After the job is complete and the stencil has been thoroughly cleaned, we perform a final test. If the tension has dropped below 35 N/cm, the stencil is flagged for retirement or re-stretching. This ensures that a worn-out tool isn't accidentally used for a critical future project.
