Embryonic Stage: The 'Genetic Code' in Design Drawings
Before becoming a complete PCBA, my existence began with the creative spark of engineers. Designers used specialised software to map out my 'genetic blueprint', circuit schematics, and PCB layouts. This phase determined my 'innate capabilities': whether I would become the 'brain' of a smartwatch or the 'nerve centre' of a new energy vehicle.
Infancy: The 'Skeletal Formation' of the PCB Substrate
'As the ultraviolet light from the photolithography machine cascaded down like sunlight, the rudiments of my neural network began to take shape...'
With the design blueprint in hand, I enter the materialisation phase. First comes the fabrication of the PCB substrate, my 'skeleton'. Copper-clad laminate undergoes photolithography, etching, drilling, and other processes, gradually revealing intricate circuit patterns. This technique traces back to 1936, when Paul Eisler invented foil technology, the precursor to modern PCB manufacturing.
During production, engineers select different 'skin tones', solder mask colours, based on my intended application. Classic green remains most prevalent, though for specialised requirements, I can don white, black, or even gold 'coats'.
Adolescence: The 'Organ Transplant' of SMT Placement
'The placement machine, like a precise surgeon, implants each component into my body, granting me the ability to perceive the world...'
Once my 'skeleton' is prepared, the most critical assembly phase commences—SMT (Surface Mount Technology) placement. Within the dust-free workshop, placement machines as precise as Swiss watches deposit resistors, capacitors, chips, and other 'organs' onto my form at a rate of several components per second. This process evolved from hot-air gun soldering techniques serendipitously discovered by Intel engineers in the 1970s.
C-Alley's prototyping facility is equipped with advanced Yamaha high-speed placement equipment capable of handling components as small as 01005 size (smaller than sesame seeds!). Meanwhile, 3D SPI solder paste inspection systems and AOI automatic optical inspection units function as meticulous 'medical examiners,' ensuring flawless solder joints. This reminds me of the 1943 London Blitz, when the British military's reliance on hand-soldered radar circuits suffered frequent failures—a turning point that spurred the mass production of PCBs.

Maturity Phase: The Rite of Passage of Testing and Ageing
'When the current first coursed through my entire body, I opened my "eyes" and beheld this world awaiting my transformation...'
Upon assembly completion, I undergo a series of rigorous capability assessments: ICT online testing, functional verification, and endurance trials. These tests ensure my readiness for future service. Throughout this process, engineers simulate extreme conditions—extreme heat, freezing temperatures, humidity, and vibration—all to forge the most dependable product.
Mission Period: Serving as the 'Brain' of Electronic Devices
'I was installed into the final product, commencing my mission to transform human lives...'
After passing all tests, I shall be integrated into the final product—be it a smartphone, medical device, or IoT terminal. Here, my true mission as the 'electronic brain' commences. In some repair shop in Huaqiangbei, Shenzhen, a seasoned technician might be repairing a smartwatch circuit under a microscope. That manipulation on a 0.4-millimetre solder pad echoes across time and space with the soldering techniques employed in Manchester factories seventy years prior.
Today, with technological advancement, my form continues to evolve. Flexible circuit boards bend and fold like paper, while graphene wires are finer than spider silk. Within this compact space, humanity weaves not merely simple electrical pathways, but the very neural network of our digital civilisation.
This is my story, the confession of a PCBA. Next time you use an electronic device, remember that inside lies a PCBA like me, quietly providing intelligent support for your life.
