Analysis of the Structural Features and Technical Specifications of Surveillance Camera PCB Assemblies

With the intelligent upgrade of the security industry, network high-definition surveillance cameras have become widely used in homes, campuses, roads, factories and other settings. The PCBA circuit board serves as the core hardware component of the surveillance camera, handling all functions including image capture, signal processing, encoding and compression, network transmission, power management, night vision illumination and pan-tilt control. The camera's resolution, night vision performance, stability, battery life and ability to run intelligent AI algorithms all depend directly on the PCBA's design process, board specifications and component quality.

1. Main Components of the Surveillance Camera Unit
The complete surveillance camera unit primarily consists of four major PCBA modules: the main control board, the infrared LED board, the power supply board and the pan-tilt driver board. Each module has a clearly defined role and works in coordination with the others to form a complete security imaging system.

2. Main Control Board – Core Processing Unit
The main control board serves as the camera's central processing unit, housing the SoC chip, image sensor interfaces, memory chips, flash storage, Ethernet port, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules, and audio-video processing circuits. It is responsible for receiving images from the CMOS image sensor and performing image processing, H.264/H.265 video encoding, motion detection, human detection, two-way audio communication, and cloud data transmission. High-definition smart cameras place extremely high demands on the motherboard’s wiring density, signal integrity and interference resistance. Impedance must be strictly controlled and differential signal lengths kept equal to prevent issues such as image stuttering, screen distortion, latency and disconnections.

3. Infrared Light Board – Night-Vision Illumination
The infrared light board provides night-vision illumination for the camera. It integrates infrared LEDs, current-limiting resistors and a light-sensing circuit; the lights switch off automatically during the day and switch on automatically when light levels are insufficient at night, enabling 24-hour uninterrupted surveillance. The light board must incorporate effective heat dissipation design to prevent yellowing or burnout of the LEDs during prolonged use, ensuring a clear night-vision image free from noise.

4. Power Management PCBA – Stable Power Supply and Protection
The power management PCBA handles external 12V DC power supply or PoE (Power over Ethernet) input, converting and outputting multiple stable voltages such as 3.3V and 5V. It also integrates protection circuits against overvoltage, overcurrent, short circuits and reverse polarity, ensuring it can withstand complex outdoor environments such as thunderstorms and voltage fluctuations, thereby preventing damage to the main board.

5. PCBA Specifications and Material Standards
Regarding PCBA specifications and parameters, there are unified industry standards for both consumer and professional surveillance cameras. The boards generally utilise high Tg FR-4 flame-retardant material with a Tg temperature of ≥130°C, offering high-temperature resistance, moisture resistance and anti-ageing properties, suitable for a wide operating temperature range of -20°C to 70°C in both indoor and outdoor environments. Conventional camera main control boards employ a 4-layer PCB design, whilst high-end 4-megapixel and 8-megapixel AI cameras utilise 6-layer HDI (High-Density Interconnect) boards with a standard thickness of 1.6 mm. Infrared LED boards and power supply boards are typically 2-layer standard PCBs with a thickness of 1.0–1.6 mm.

6. Copper Thickness and Routing Requirements
The standard copper foil thickness is 1 oz (35 μm) for signal layers, whilst power and high-current traces utilise 2 oz thickened copper, which offers high current-carrying capacity and low heat generation, making it suitable for continuous 24-hour operation. In terms of routing, the minimum line width and spacing is 0.1 mm; the BGA chip area employs a fine microvia process, with impedance control accuracy of ±5%, meeting the requirements for high-speed transmission of high-definition images.

7. Surface Treatment and Protective Coating
The mainstream surface treatment is electroless gold plating, which produces flat, oxidation-resistant solder joints, making it suitable for precision BGA and QFP chip mounting; lower-end models utilise OSP anti-oxidation treatment to control costs. PCBA for outdoor waterproof cameras must also undergo triple-proof coating treatment to provide protection against moisture, dust and corrosion, ensuring suitability for harsh environments such as rainy weather, damp industrial sites and open-air roads.

8. Future Trends in Surveillance Camera PCBA
Today, surveillance cameras are progressively evolving towards 4K ultra-high definition, AI-powered facial recognition, dual-camera panoramic views and 5G wireless transmission, placing ever-increasing demands on PCBA integration, thermal management, electromagnetic compatibility and miniaturisation. High-precision multilayer boards, ultra-thin HDI processes and integrated PCBA assemblies have become the mainstream trends in the industry.

In summary, the PCBA constitutes the core hardware of a surveillance camera; the number of PCB layers, copper thickness, manufacturing specifications and circuit design directly determine the product's image quality, stability and service life. Appropriate PCBA specifications are the fundamental guarantee of the quality of security surveillance products.
